A Failure
to See the Moment
Some
years ago, I stood at the bedside of a dying man; a man who had once known
God, and he went aside for what he hoped would be a long moment of pleasure
and prosperity. But to God's justice, he was brought to death's door sooner
than he wanted. There he stood, soon to enter death's door, but seemingly
poorly equipped to meet his maker. Because of his departure from the things
of God for immediate gratification of the flesh and the pocketbook, he
failed to see beyond his moment
All he could
see was his momentary desire--the acquisition of wealth and fleshly pleasures
at the expense of God's people. He had been a leader of God's people,
and he led them astray for his own profit and pleasure. And as he spoke,
another person and I stood along side his bed and marveled that he pronounced
his own doom and was unable to comprehend his own pronouncements
The moment kills
more quickly than we think. We sometimes see its deathly quickness only
when we have chosen it over the things of life and that moment ends at
a time we do not prefer. And sometimes it is so quick that we never see
it.
